How to tackle hayfever with acupuncture

As we move into Spring and with the warmer days, some of us will be dreading the start of hayfever season brought on by higher counts of pollen. Pollen aggravates the sensitive nasal lining and sets off an unpleasant inflammatory response. This can cause misery for some with itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, scratchy throat and headaches. Sadly Hayfever affects up to 25% of the UK population.

In Chinese medicine, we think of Hayfever as an invasion of Wind affecting the Lungs. The Wind obstructs the flow of Qi to the nose and the diffusing and descending function of the  Lungs.  The Kidneys are also an important factor as their role in grasping the Qi is also impaired.

When treating with acupuncture we are able to restore the flow of Qi to the nerves and sinuses of the head and face. Using carefully selected acupuncture points we teach the immune system not to overreact to the allergens.  With treatment the body’s Hayfever histamine response becomes calmer. In Chinese Medicine the free flow of Qi around the body is crucial to maintaining good health. When Qi is impeded from inflammation or congestion we are likely to suffer with illness, fatigue and tiredness .

Chinese medicine has been shown to be very effective in treating allergies. In a comparative study on treating Type I allergic diseases, acupuncture and desensitisation therapies were used in 143 cases. The outcome showed that acupuncture had an extensive and remarkable effect on Type I allergic reactions. The curative effect was higher in the acupuncture group than in the desensitisation group (Journal of TCM, 1993 Dec.)
