Does your Child/teen suffer from Hayfever?
Pollen season can be a horrible time of year for anyone suffering from hay fever especially a child. Although allergic rhinitis is relatively benign and a child often grows out of it it can be hugely disruptive and may make it hard for a child to concentrate at school or prevent a child being able to go outside in the summer months and its horrible to see your child suffering! Pollen season often coincides with school exams too.
In Chinese medicine, we traditionally treat hay fever in the Autumn by supporting and regulating the immune system in preparation for the spring/summer. In Chinese medicine we call this treating the root (The "Ben"). However if you havn't addressed this ahead of time treatment at this time of year focuses on the relieving of symptoms. We call this treating the branch or the manifestation of symptoms ("The Biao").
As Acupuncturists we focus on treatment to bring about more balance in the child's body so that he/she no longer reacts in the same way, we can not change the environment but we can change how the child responds to it.
Chinese medicine has been shown to be very effective in treating allergies. In a comparative study on treating Type I allergic diseases, acupuncture and desensitisation therapies were used in 143 cases. The outcome showed that acupuncture had an extensive and remarkable effect on Type I allergic reactions. The curative effect was higher in the acupuncture group than in the desensitisation group (Journal of TCM, 1993 Dec.)
