Case study-anxiety and full body tic.
Children have a lot to cope with these days; pressure from school and social media, over-scheduling, poor diet, digital overload and so on. With so much on their plate, many children and young people today suffer from anxiety-induced conditions. Anxiety can manifest in many different forms including sleep difficulty, depression, panic attacks and tics. It is well documented that the pandemic brought an increase in child mental health issues- with the British Medical Journal reporting that there was a particular explosion of tics in children during the pandemic https://adc.bmj.com/content/106/5/420
At the Blossom Tree Children’s Clinic we have found that acupuncture can be effective in reducing vocal and body tics. And here is a recent example of a patient from our clinic:
A 6 year old boy (let’s call him Finn) came to the clinic because he was experiencing full and very disruptive body tics. In stressful situations his whole body would involuntarily move he described them as “body jumps”. The tics began when he started at his new school. He found them exhausting and his parents were concerned. We used a combination of guasha (a gentle scraping technique), press seeds, laser, and no more than two fine needles per session. After 3 treatments Finn’s tics were gone.
There is a growing body of evidence which demonstrates the effectiveness of acupuncture for childhood illnesses. A recent study carried out in Shanghai, reported in the Acupuncture Times, found evidence to support the therapeutic effect of acupuncture for children with tics.
